"Hi. Onika?"
"Yeah." She said dully.
"I was just trying to get to know you."
"For what?" She snapped.
Safaree looked puzzled. "I just do it to be nice."
"Well not everyone wants you to know their business."
"Okay." He said backing off. He paused for a minute before asking his next question.
"How old are you?"
"Why?!"
"I have to know to correct the judges sentencing." He lied.
"24."
"Why are you doing this?"
"Some people have to make money."
"This is SO not the way to do it."
"Why don't you stay OUT of my business."
"Well I'm kinda already in it. I am your attorney."
"You already get on my nerves and I don't even know you well."
"Well you need me."
"Actually I don't need YOU. I can always get someone else."
"Their probably not as good as I am."
"I bet they're better."
"Damn, you're really bitter."
"And you're really annoying."
The judge walked in. "All rise." Everyone did the oath and they proceeded with the case.
"It seems here Ms. Maraj that you're charged with prostitution and illegal usage of drugs."
Safaree spoke. "Yes, your honor."
The judge spoke again. "14 years no bail." He hit the gavel.
"What?!" Nicki said with her eyes almost leaving her sockets.
"Nicki sit." Safaree said and went up to the judge.
"Can we please negotiate the bail?"
"Okay. Twelve-thousand-dollars bail."
"Thank you judge." Safaree walked back to Nicki.
"He said twelve-thousand-dollars bail."
"What?! That's a lot of money."
"I'll help you out." He said winking at her.
Nicki was awoke by her alarm clock.
What kind of dream was that? She asked herself. Me? A prostitute? Haha! Nicki did her daily awake up routine. She's been handling a case with this Safaree Samuels for months now. Safaree has been a drug dealer for 2 years. One day while selling, a cop in disguise asked for some, sure enough he was arrested. The judge issued him too much undeserved time.
Nicki walked into the court room a little to prepare herself. She thought. Why do people sell dope anyway? Well maybe they have to make a living. This was nothing new to Nicki. She's seen dope dealers, prostitutes, pimps, mass murders, and serial killers. After few minutes of waiting, the jury started filling the empty spaces. Then came the judge and Safaree. He came and sat next to me.
"Good morning, Nicki." He smiling ear to ear.
"Good morning, Safaree." I said laughing a little.
"Why you laugh?" He said with a confused face.
"I don't know."
"You look really pretty today Mrs. Maraj."
"Ms."
"Oh I though you'd be married."
"Why?" I said laughing.
"I've always thought pretty women were married." He said grinning.
"You are ridiculous." I said laughing.
The judge walked in and started. Safaree was definitely going to prison. I was just there to limit his time.
"You'd think a judge be carried in. Ol' conceited ass." Safaree mumbled to me.
"Shut up." I said hitting him.
"Son, how long have you been dealing?" the judge asked.
"Two years, your honor."
"Two years in prison!" He hit the gavel. The officers handcuffed him and off he went. I watched as he was taken away. It kinda broke my heart to see him go. But I'm very emotional.
------------------------
It's been 18 months since Safaree has been gone. I don't know why I can't stop thinking about him. It was something about him that made me very happy. I got of bed and went to check the mail. Bills, Bills, MONEY, Bills, Bil--- it was a letter from Safaree. I ran inside and opened it.
Dear Ms. Maraj,
Hey, I was just touching basses with you. How are you doing? I miss you a lot. Things here aren't as bad as I thought, except for that one guy who wants you to fuck them. (Hehe) Look, I'm getting out of here pretty soon, and I was wondering if you could pick me up when I get out. If that's not too much to ask. I know we don't know each other very well but I really need help getting my life back on track. I love you. See you soon.
~ Safaree
I sat there and wrote him back. I would definitely pick him up.
